| City of New Haven Recognizes ADA Anniversary Michelle M. Duprey, Esq. Director The City of New Haven’s Department of Services for Persons with Disabilities would like to recognize the 13th anniversary of the signing of the Americans’ with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA guarantees that people with disabilities have equal opportunities to engage in employment, participate in programs and services of state and local governments, enjoy places of public accommodation, and have easy access to public transportation. In the 13 years since this key legislation was signed, our community has become more accessible for persons with disabilities and our inclusive environment has benefited our entire community. As we celebrate this key day in our history, it is our pleasure to announce that the City of New Haven has been selected as one of three model communities to receive the Real Choice Systems Change Grant. This grant is designed to help communities foster inclusion of persons with disabilities throughout their life spans. As part of New Haven’s activities under this grant the Department of Services for Persons with Disabilities will be publishing quarterly newsletters for New Haven residents. The newsletters will contain items of interest to people of all ages with disabilities, including information on a variety of disability resources. In addition to the newsletter, we will be sponsoring activities on National Disability Mentoring Day, October 15, 2003, where young people with disabilities will be matched with employers to learn more about working in various fields. Individuals with disabilities between the ages of 16 and 24 and employers who are interested in participating in National Disability Mentoring Day can contact the Department to get more information. If you are a New Haven resident and would like to receive the newsletter, please complete and return the form below. If you need a disability related accommodation to sign up for the newsletter, please contact the City of New Haven’s Department of Services for Persons with Disabilities at (203) 946-7833 or TTY/TTD: (203) 946-8582.
